Select resin from the application—not a familiar acronym.

The right thermoplastic grade has to satisfy service conditions, molded geometry, appearance, validation and supply continuity at the same time.

The short answer

Choose a grade only after the requirement is measurable.

“Strong,” “heat resistant” and “chemical resistant” are not complete specifications. Define the actual load, temperature range, exposure time, chemical, appearance and expected life. Then compare exact commercial grades, not only broad polymer families.

01 / Define the job

Translate the part’s environment into reviewable inputs.

Start with normal service and abnormal events. A cover that sees occasional cleaning fluid has a different material problem from a part immersed continuously. A short impact is different from a constant load that may cause creep. State whether the molded part is structural, cosmetic, insulating, wear-facing or only protective.

02 / Build the shortlist

Compare property balance, not the highest single value.

Common thermoplastics offer different balances of toughness, stiffness, dimensional behavior, finish, temperature performance and cost. Fillers and modifiers can change shrinkage, warpage, surface appearance and weld-line behavior. Color and recycled-content requirements can also affect the available grade and validation path.

A data sheet is screening evidence, not part approval.

Published values are measured under defined laboratory conditions. The molded geometry, process, conditioning and real application still need to be considered.

03 / Connect material to geometry

The same CAD can behave differently in a different resin.

Flow length, nominal wall, wall transitions, ribs, bosses, gate position and fiber orientation affect fill, shrinkage and distortion. A stiffer filled grade may improve one load case while increasing anisotropic shrinkage or visible surface effects. Material and DFM should therefore be reviewed in the same loop.

  • Wall: keep the nominal section purposeful and transition gradually where thickness changes.
  • Flow: check whether the resin can reach thin or distant features without an unstable processing window.
  • Shrinkage: consider direction, gate location, reinforcement and datum strategy around critical interfaces.
  • Assembly: review bosses, fasteners, snap features, inserts and long-term stress in the selected grade.
  • Appearance: agree where gate vestige, weld lines, parting and ejection evidence may be acceptable.

04 / Confirm the exact grade

Release the material with the part and approval plan.

The quotation should identify the resin basis and any assumptions. Before repeat production, connect the exact grade, color, approved source and required declarations to the released drawing or project record. Trial parts should be judged against critical dimensions, appearance, assembly and functional needs using an agreed condition.
